ROTC and Student Life Host Memorial Stair Climb

ROTC cadets stand guard around piece of twin towers

Every year on September 11th Eastern Kentucky University’s ROTC program works alongside Student Life to host the 9/11 ceremony and stair climb. EKU is the only school in the state to hold an event like this.

The ceremony and stair climb were held in Keene Hall, EKU’s tallest residence hall. Students and community members climbed the 16 flights of stairs multiple times in order to replicate the twin towers. In addition, ROTC cadets stood guard all day long surrounding a piece of the twin towers formerly gifted to EKU.

Not only did students vigorously climb the many flights but some ROTC students did so with the addition of 35 pound rucksacks. Fire and safety students climbed in full firefighter gear. The day was filled with remembrance for those that served and lost their lives on September 11, 2001. The dedication and hard work that goes into planning and executing this event each year is not only recognized on campus but now in surrounding communities as well.

This year the event made the evening ABC 36 news. Watch the clip here.
